The Western perspective of disease or injury is that “something has happened to you,” and medication or surgery will “fix” you.

It’s true, the busy modern life makes it more difficult to be healthy, but how do you define health?

Health is a noun, but it could also be a verb, as it takes active participation in the process of being healthy. Health is more than the absence of disease and it also takes active participation to recover your health.

Illness and disease can be a metaphor; why is it some people develop a thyroid condition in response to stress, when someone else develops colitis? How is it that one woman will have PCOS, Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, while another woman will have an abnormal mammogram and be diagnosed with breast cancer?

If you are ill, one of the first steps to recover your health is to optimize your body’s innate healing capacity and strengthen your inner connection to yourself. In my more than 30 years of clinical practice, I’ve seen that there is also an important energetic basis for both disease and good health.

I didn’t always feel this way; I was raised in a traditional American household where if you got sick, you went to the doctor and took medication. There was no thought of “Why am I sick?” or “How does my illness reflect my stress?”

After college, I was living in a spiritual community in New York when my roommate was diagnosed with cancer.

We were attending her last oncology appointment at Memorial Sloane Kettering Hospital after she had completed radiation treatment for a tumor in her chest.  I held her hand as the oncologist told her, “We’ve done all we can for you; there’s nothing more to do.”

Unwilling to accept that fate, she sought out a pioneer in the field of natural healing, Dr. Christopher Gian Cursio. Before the concept of detoxifying became a household world, Dr. Cursio was recommending detoxifying diets for his patients who hadn’t been helped by standard medicine.

Dr. Cursio treated my friend, and she is alive today, healthy, working and enjoying her life!

I was fortunate to work for Dr. Cursio as his assistant. Although I did not realize it then, his approach and genius were my introduction to the concept that given the right nutrition and support, to create an inner environment of health, the body has the ability to heal itself.

On a daily basis I witnessed his patients, for whom medical treatment had failed, recover their health through his detoxifying protocols.

I clearly remember the day I discovered a catalogue for the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Dr. Cursio’s office. I realized immediately I had found my path to gain the education and skills I would need to provide this type of deep healing for the people I would be fortunate to work with.
